From the 9th to the 12th of August 2023, Sun and Shield Primary & Junior School's Men of Issachar set sail on a remarkable coastal academic trip that left an indelible mark on both hearts and minds. This four-day expedition was a convergence of education, exploration, and fun, where young minds were nurtured, horizons broadened, and memories etched forever.
Day 1: The Voyage Begins (9th August 2023)
The journey began in the pre-dawn hours, at a time when the world still slumbered. Departing at 3:00 a.m., the excited students set out on a road adventure. The first stopover, Moi Educational Centre (MEC), greeted them with open arms and a hearty breakfast, energizing the young travelers for the road ahead. With spirits high and energy recharged, the journey continued, and the second stopover took place at the captivating Mtito Andei.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the travelers arrived in Mombasa, their destination illuminated by the golden hues of dusk. A long day of travel culminated in their arrival at the SUN AND SAND BEACH RESORT, where a comfortable night's rest awaited. Parents eager to be part of this experience were also welcomed to visit the resort and share in the excitement.
Day 2: Coastal Marvels Unveiled (10th August 2023)
The second day dawned with a promise of exploration and learning. The students embarked on a coastal journey that encompassed a tapestry of enriching experiences. The itinerary was a treasure trove of iconic locations and landmarks:
- Kenya Ports Authority (KPA): Peeking into the heart of maritime operations, students gained insights into the logistics that drive global trade.
- Ferry Adventure: Navigating the bustling waters, the ferry ride was a taste of local life and connectivity.
- Waterfront Wander: A stroll along the water's edge provided a chance to absorb the coastal atmosphere.
- Fort Jesus: Stepping back in time, the students explored this UNESCO World Heritage Site, unlocking tales of history and resilience.
- Beach Bliss: The azure waters and sandy shores of the beach offered a space for relaxation and rejuvenation.
- Retail Therapy: A shopping escapade allowed students to interact with local vendors and sample coastal treasures.
Day 3: Exploring Nature's Bounty (11th August 2023)
Day three embraced the natural wonders of the coast. The itinerary highlighted the beauty of the local environment:

Day 4: Homeward Bound, a Train Adventure (12th August 2023)
The final day marked the journey back, this time by train on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Departing at 8:00 a.m., from Mombasa terminus, the students made their first stop at Syokimau Railway Station. This strategic drop-off point eased the return for learners residing in Nairobi, showcasing meticulous planning and consideration for every participant.
The journey was more than just a trip; it was a lesson in understanding the times and gaining insights from exploration, much like the Men of Issachar from the Bible who understood the times and knew what Israel should do (1 Chronicles 12:32a, NIV).
The Men of Issachar Coastal Academic Trip 2023 was an embodiment of educational excellence, cultural immersion, and memorable experiences. These young minds returned with not just souvenirs, but with a broader perspective, a deeper appreciation for the coastal heritage, and friendships forged through shared experiences. Sun and Shield Primary & Junior School continues to shine as a beacon of holistic education, leaving an everlasting impact on its students.
