Monday evening marked a turning point for a group of young tech enthusiasts at Sun and Shield School, as they took their first bold steps into the exciting world of web application development and digital content creation, a critical step in the school’s mission to revitalize its online presence and empower student voices.
In a special session held in the school’s ICT lab, selected student representatives from Grades 7, 8, and 9 participated in a hands-on training designed to inspire creativity and equip them with 21st-century skills. The session was led by Mr. Peter Inziano, a seasoned software, mobile, and web applications developer who serves as the University Webmaster at Kabarak University and also supports Sun and Shield Junior and Primary School in its digital transformation efforts. The training blended technical web development fundamentals with principles of digital storytelling and content creation, key themes from the school’s recent Student Empowerment Workshops.
Mr. Inziano brought a refreshing and relatable approach to the session, sharing real-world insights while encouraging students to explore the creative and problem-solving aspects of technology. Though primarily focused on backend systems in his day-to-day work, he embraced the opportunity to step into a more interactive role, mentoring the students and sparking their curiosity. “What I experienced today was nothing short of inspiring,” Mr. Inziano reflected. “These students are incredibly blessed, curious, tech-savvy, and eager to learn. Their enthusiasm reminds me just how much potential lies in the next generation.”
During the session, students were introduced to the fundamentals of web development, including basic HTML structures, interface design, and digital content creation tools. As they explored these technical foundations, Mr. Inziano emphasized how coding skills intersect with the art of creating compelling online content. “Web development isn’t just about code, it’s about building platforms where stories come to life,” he noted.
The atmosphere was alive with curiosity and innovation as students actively engaged, asking questions, experimenting with ideas, and beginning to sketch out their digital projects. This hands-on experience aligns with the school’s Empowering Young Voices initiative, which encourages students to take an active role in updating the school’s website and social media platforms with fresh, authentic content.
The training also touched on responsible digital practices. Students discussed the importance of online safety and permissions and were reminded to balance creativity with respect for privacy. “Your projects should reflect both innovation and integrity,” he added.
Also present to support and encourage the learners were Mr. Ndung’u, the Deputy Head Teacher, and Mr. Edward Oketch, whose presence underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and practical digital skills among students.
As the afternoon wrapped up, the energy was palpable. One group of students eagerly shared their ongoing projects with the webmaster, while others gathered to brainstorm an article about their science class’s solar system models, an idea sparked by the day’s inspiring presentation.
Mr. Inziano left the group with a final challenge: “Practice relentlessly, stay curious, and remember that every line of code or story you write is a step toward shaping the digital world.”
As the session concluded, the students walked away not only with newfound knowledge and a deeper sense of excitement for the endless possibilities in the digital world, but also with the understanding that they are not just learning to build websites, they’re amplifying their voices and leaving a lasting digital footprint. The future, without a doubt, is in capable hands.
